Resolved Question: Why is Moby Dick white?
Hi, I have to write an essay on Moby Dick and my prompt asks why did Herman Melville choose the color white as the color of Moby Dick; as in what does it symbolize? I need to have already 3 - 4 body paragraphs. I have written 2 - the first said Moby Dick being white represents innocence, as in he probably bit Ahab's leg off in self defense and did not act out of malice, had no evil intentions. And (sorry for spoiling the ending for anyone) but seeing add how Moby Dick "won" and Ahab and the Pequod crew "lost", I'd say it also shows that God will always beast evil. In my second paragraph, I talked about white showing purity (not sure if innocence and purity are the same; atleast in my mind they're not :P) because purity is connected to infallibility because Moby Dick cannot be held accountable for his crimes because he can't ever get caught in the first place. I actually wrote my essay a lot better than I have described, I just summarized it here. Of anyone could give me any ideas, that would be great. Thank you! :D Eek! Sorry there's typos in the question above! It should say ," I'd say it also shows GOOD will always BEAT evil. And IF, not of, anyone could give me any ideas, that would be great.
Once again, thank you!

Resolved Question: What would Ahab have done
We are studying Moby Dick in my American Literature course, and my professor suggested that if Ahab had killed Moby Dick, he would not have been able to move on. She suggests that Moby Dick would have continued to haunt Ahab even after he succeeded in killing him. I thought, however, that he would be able to go home to his wife and kids, and be at least content to live out the rest of his days in this way, because he does talk about missing his wife and kids, and still exhibits signs of a knowledgable captain (meaning he kept some of his sanity). I'm interested in what you all have to think. Any opinions or ideas? What makes you think so? In response to David, maybe I gave too much information. I appreciate all your opinions, because I thought this question was interesting and I wanted to hear more viewpoints, or different reasons for having the same viewpoint. I am not interested in what is "right" or "wrong", because that's not what literature is, especially a novel as ambiguous as Moby Dick, and my personal opinion will not be changed. The beauty of literature is that it does mean different things to different people, depending on what they need or where they are in their life. It would be wrong, and frankly sad, to agree with a teacher simply because they have that title, when all they are doing is stating their own opinion. Studying masterpieces like this one is reliant upon the sharing of differing ideas.
