In a couple of weeks I will go on a short break to Flanders with my girlfriend, visiting Brugge/Bruges, Middelkerke and Ieper/Ypres. We'll be using the Belgian rail network to travel around. Both of us only speak English, but would still like to greet people in the local language. So how would I say "hello", "thank you" and "goodbye"? Also, what are the Flemish phrases for "how are you?" and "I am well"? Lastly, can you tell me how I would say "do you speak English?" in Flemish? So from 2wicky's answer I gather there is a distinction between standard Dutch and the local dialect West Flemish. This complicates matters too much even to attempt the basic "Yow" and "Ta ta wè" phrases, if these are not used outside of the sub-region. I presume mainstream Dutch is understood by all? So "Hoi", "Dank u (wel)", "Tot ziens" and "Spreekt u Engels?" ought to be a good enough starting point so at least we are not launching into English straight away. The "nooky in the kitchen" phrase won't be necessary, because by that stage in conversation we'll be using English anyway ;/) A good tip by skipper747. No need to worry, I will only say these basic phrases and will make sure the pronunciation is correct. So Hoi is pronounced "hoy", Dank u wel is "dahnk oo vel" and Tot ziens is "toht zeens"

I'm going with my friends sometime soon hopefully on a beach trip and I would love to put tents up and sleep over night on the beach and make a campfire. Preferably in Belgium, but France and Holland are good as well. Any websites would be much apreciated.
