Resolved Question: Reykjavik, Iceland or
Next summer, I have a chance to travel to either Rome or Reykjavik for 2 months. This isn't an educational or family trip, I'll be alone So please tell me these things: Which is more touristy? Are tourists easy to avoid? Which has cheaper lodging? Cheaper food? Who has the more pleasant people? Which city is safer? Which city has the better ability to speak English? What is the extent if the language I will have to learn in each?

Resolved Question: What is the historic
Let's start here with a nice graph from GISS: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/show_station.cgi?id=620040300000&dt=1&ds=14 Now I went to get some data. First, GISS has the data for their above graph here: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/tmp/gistemp/STATIONS/tmp_620040300000_14_0/station.txt Next, I went to the Icelandic Met Office: http://en.vedur.is/Medaltalstoflur-txt/Reykjavik.txt I fiddled in Excel and came up with this: http://postimg.org/image/ru15z0cgz/ Note that the Met Office data goes to 2000 and GISS to 2012 (with some gaps for some reason). So just a few questions: 1. Where exactly did the GISS data come from? 2. Why is there such a discrepancy? 3. How often does a mainstream global temperature dataset (like GISTemp) contain elements of individual locations that clearly show more warming than the local data? How often is the reverse true? 4. Does anybody wish to do a more advanced analysis? (This is just me in 20 minutes.) _____________________________________________________________________ I came across an interesting email on this subject. This email from a Trausti Jónsson from the Iceland Met Office: ****** From: Trausti Jónsson To: paul homewood Cc: Halldór Björnsson Sent: Monday, 23 January 2012, 17:40 Subject: Re: monthly temperatures Hi Paul. We have sent a questions to the GHCN database regarding this and they will look into the problem. Regarding your questions: a) Were the Iceland Met Office aware that these adjustments are being made? - No we were not aware of this. b) Has the Met Office been advised of the reasons for them? - No, but we are asking for the reasons c) Does the Met Office accept that their own temperature data is in error, and that the corrections applied by GHCN are both valid and of the correct value? If so, why? - The GHCN “corrections” are grossly in error in the case of Reykjavik but not quite as bad for the other stations. But we will have a better look. We do not ac ...We do not accept these “corrections”. d) Does the Met Office intend to modify their own temperature records in line with GHCN? - No. ******* I wonder who Jonsson contacted about this and what the response was? Because that's really the heart of my question. 0 seconds ago ____________________________________________________________ @climate realist: "The red curve is the data corrected for the urban heat island effect." I would think the UHI effect is increasing so that explanation doesn't make sense. ______________________________________________________________ @Some1Has: "I am more interested in how you came across the email..." That's probably your paranoia acting up. Here, send Paul a polite message and I'm sure he'll fill you in: http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/ "Perhaps the only real discrepancy is the perceived one." No, it's a real one and one that the Met Office doesn't quite understand. "I can look at global conditions and get an understanding of what is happening to our global climate." I have no doubt you can look at anything and see whatever you want. "Do you gamble any, Ottawa Mike?" Well actually I do play holdem but more importantly, I do risk management in my day job. So I do understand the concept of assessing risk and mitigating it (albeit in network security). So I understand that making a bad bet can be just as devastating as missing a good bet. And that usually stems from the And that usually stems from the belief that a bet MUST be made where waiting for more information is a better play. "Why does your Excel chart show data for 1901 - 1930 for the Icelandic Met Office?" It doesn't. It shows Met office from 1931-2000 and GISS from 1931-2012. _________________________________________________________________ @climate realist2: Well I guess it's up to you to either accept John Cook's explanation or the one from the actual meteorologists in the Iceland Met Office who say: "The GHCN “corrections” are grossly in error..." ___________________________________________________________________ @Some1Has: The X-axis is the data point number from my Excel chart. Data Point #1 = 1931. Data Point #70 = 2000.
