Hello!
soooooooo...
i have a 14yr old thoroughbred mare... she's an ex polo pony and pony club pony.. i've had her for almost 3 years now.
i'm 16.
when i got her.. we were both quite shocking really. i rode around with my hands about a meter wide and dead straight arms (my hands were basically on my thighs the whole time). my hands would bounce around and get her in the mouth constantly.. and i had a very unstable seat (i had been riding for 5 years, but unfortunately that was HOW i was taught...)
she was not much better. hollow back, head up in the air. she would constantly rear and wouldn't jump a twig without a lead off of another horse. (her old owner was far too heavy for her, and couldn't handle her. said she never put her head down etc..)
so basically. she was a cheap horse and i was getting very poor instruction.
finally, nearly 3 years on, i stopped lessons with my old trainer and now have a new, seriously amazing trainer :D
we have both come a long way. we now compete in training level eventing 95cm, and seeing as its winter now, we're looking to improve for next season.. especially on our dressage.
I'm not a big fan of dressage, but thats only because i have never done too well at it. now i have set aside the next month to focus soley on it (and obviously longer, but i mean one month of complete dedication)
our big problems are that redi does occasionally throw her head up, especially during downwards transitions no matter how little i use the reins. she also tends to go behind the vertical, due to my old trainer telling me that was how she should go...
Redi doesn't give in very easily to pressure, and this is when she will start to back up and go to rear (she hasn't reared in about 2 years but does threaten) i've been avoiding this issue by dropping all pressure when she fights it and starts to back up. but there is no reason for her to be doing it, her teeth are done regularly, she has a fitting saddle... no pains or illnesses. it's just a learnt habit from her polo days apparently.
i used to ride her in a plain eggbutt snaffle, but have recently swapped to an eggbutt happy mouth mullen mouth bit because she goes so much better in it.
SO
i have ridden her in a market harborough a few times recently.. and have found massive improvements. when she hit the pressure, at first she flipped out and started backing up and almost reared.. but she soon learnt that it was easier just to pop her head back down. I could feel her holding her side of the contact really nicely, (something that we have been working on with our trainer anyways) and she was even a bit infront of the vertical, which i would much prefer. she did lovely transitions, and did the best canter i have ever felt from her. she was engaging her hocks and just felt so collected and upright. like nothing she has ever given me. i found that it really helped me also, by making me be more alert, incase she lifted her head, and made me put my legs on to really drive her forwards at these times.
the entire time she was wearing the market harborough i could feel how engaged her back muscles were, she felt taller and as if there really was something underneath me.
i know that the market harborough is a gadget.. but i really feel that it is working on my mare.
i also know that it is an extremely controversial piece of equipment.
My question is.. what is your opinion on the market harborough? what are your stories? did it work/not work with you and your horse?
