Resolved Question: Seniors, especially in
their own sweets? It was made from sugar boiled with a little water until it was pourable into a tray and when almost set was cut into squares. Something was added to make it light brown and that colouring might also have been the flavouring which had a great aroma. I don't know if it really was meant to be good when one had a cough but most of us loved it and I wish I could still buy it or knew what that added ingredient was. I'd have a go at making it if I had that information. The question about sugar mice set me off thinking about this. So many of the sweets available when we were young now seem to have vanished or are now sold wrapped and bagged. Another sweet I cannot buy now is one which was called Black and White mints. I do not refer to the hard boiled (and wrapped) Everton Mints but to something identical to liquorice allsorts (the square layered one) except that the white layer between the liquorice layer was mint flavoured. We could also buy mint allsorts which were all the different shapes one can buy as liquorice allsorts but, again, the none liquorice parts were mint flavoured. If anyone in the U.K. knows if these are still available somewhere please let me know.

Resolved Question: Suggestions for an
My wife, teenaged daughter, and I (from British Columbia, Canada) will be visiting North Yorkshire in March. We plan to visit the Yorkshire Dales and Pateley Bridge (my family's ancestral home) but probably only have 1 or 2 nights to stay in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to stay? I have twice previously visited York, and love the place, but Harrogate, Knaresborough, and Ripon are all quite a bit closer to the Dales. Would I be depriving my wife and daughter by not staying in York (they've never been there), or are any of these other towns similarly interesting? We enjoy historical sites, attractive countryside, and hill walking. My daughter, of course, also enjoys theme parks and shopping, but she's pretty easy-going and can probably wait until we are in the London area for that.

Resolved Question: Suggestions for places to
My wife, 16 year old daughter and I will be in the UK in March for 2 weeks, will probably rent a car, and plan to travel between relatives in Edinburgh, Cardiff and London. Being from Canada, we're used to all kinds of weather, and driving long distances. We enjoy hill walking, visiting historic sites and museums, and exploring small villages. We also enjoy some of the popular tourist attractions. We've visited several times before; here are examples of some of the places we've previously enjoyed: Central London (museums, usual tourist sights) Brighton (Pier, waterfront, Royal Pavillion) Dover Kew Gardens Hampton Court Palace Greenwich Observatory Thames River by boat HMS Victory at Portsmouth Stamford Dorchester Conwy Angelsey York Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire Windermere Tintagel, Cornwall the Eden Project St. Andrews Edinburgh Royal Mile, Castle, Arthur's Seat I'd be happy to visit some of these same wonderful places again, but would really appreciate any suggestions for new places to visit. In particular, ideas for places to visit near Liverpool and Manchester, the Peaks District, and North Yorkshire (eg, Harrogate - Ripon - Yorkshire Dales) would be most helpful, as well as in Scotland. Our schedule is such that we won't likely stay more than one or two nights in any one place. We greatly enjoy the UK, and look forward to our next visit! We will definitely be in Scotland, Wales, and England during this holiday. Northern Ireland is probably a bit less likely, but not impossible. Thanks everyone for the great suggestions so far!
