Resolved Question: Which language to learn,
Alright, so if I've garnered your attention and you're here, I have a really interesting question to ask. Which language should I learn? First, hear me out. Then look at my options. Then, please tell me. Use logic and reasoning. Or wing it. Just write an answer. My criteria for a language is primarily how it sounds. Don't judge, I also base it off of usefulness, etc. Keep this in mind. So, first off, I'm really into travelling. I was a foreign exchange student in Europe and learned to speak German, French, Italian, and Swiss German. German and Swiss German are my best, I have B1 certificates in German and French. Italian I just play around with because I have Italian friends, but I also did a little bit of Italian-English translation work in Melbourne. I'm also into genealogy. This stuff is super interesting to me. My G-ma and I chill together and look up family shiz and it's super cool. My mom's side of the fam is what I'm interested in. I'm pretty much a Euromutt. My great grandmother was Polish, immigrated to the US and met my great-grandfather, from Vitebsk, Russia. They got hitched and had my grandma., on my mother's side. Now for my grandfather, his father (my great grandfather) came from Bucovina, a country that was annexed between Romania and Ukraine. His city was Chernivtsi, which is in Ukraine. Rather large city. Anyways, his family immigrated and he met a girl with a dutch slash German last name. no info on her. I'm really curious about my Slavic background. I have almost no contact, maybe two people, on my mother's side of the family. No one is a native speaker of any language. So no incentive there. This gives me a few options: Learn Ukrainian. It sounds cool, like Russian! however, my family wasn't Ukrainian, they were bucovinian. They probably spoke Russian. I also hear that most Ukrainians speak Russian. But, I have an adopted brother from Ukraine who I haven't seen in a while, it'd be cool if we could speak Ukrainian, if he still remembers any. There's a bunch of documents pertaining to Bucovina in Ukraine, and they're probably written in Cyrillic Ukrainian or Russian, which brings on the next point, Learn Russian. Undisputed lingua franca of Eastern Europe in general. Also documents in Vitebsk that I would like to get a hold of. However, it used to be an oppressive language, and I heard that my family never spoke it because of bad experiences, etc. I started then stopped, but i love it. it sounds amazing off the tongue, like I'm a Russian gangster. There's also Russians in my area. Next is Learn Polish. Documents are written in Russian and Polish, but communication with anyone in Poland is always always in Polish. I got by a couple times in Russian, but Polish would be nice to know. I don't exactly love how it sounds, it's a little nasal to me, but it is very similar to my basic Russian. I'm also in the process of getting my Polish passport? It might be cool, but not mandatory to know Polish. Learn Latvian. Before the guy from Russia lived in Russia, his family came from Latvia. Baltic languages are way different. But there is a bundle of documents written in mixed Latvian and Russian, so it could be useful. Learn Bosnian, or BCS for politically correct people. No family connection, just a bunch of Bosnians/Croations/Serbians in my area. I know that they don't exactly have a uniform language, but share mutual intelligibility. Also on the list are danish and swedish, because I have danish and swedish friends. So, what do you think? I would be passionate about any language, I really love German as my second language. Thanks for looking. Now hurry up and give me advice! :)

Resolved Question: Russian language Courses?
I'm at a basic level in Russian, and I want to be fluent. In order to do this I want to go to either Russia or Ukraine for 3 years. So my question is: Which city would you recommend me going to? I would prefer to be in Russia, but there Visa system is very complex... Is studying in Russia for 3 years worth the hastle of the visa system? If so should I go to Moscow or Saint Petersburg? Which city is better and why? OR should I go to Kiev, Ukraine to learn? If you think I should go to Ukraine... Tell me why. спасибо!

Resolved Question: Which cities and towns
By this I mean like which cities or towns had the highest percentage of Jews living in them?? Was it Chernivtsi? Saratov? Gomel? I got a feeling that the towns/cities with the highest concentration of Jews were probably in Ukraine and Belarus, not in Russia. Do you think that would be true? I can't seem to find anything online regarding the concentration of Jews in the SU just before it broke up.
